Please Take the 5 Essentials Survey

Dear RICHLAND Families,

Starting this year, Illinois schools will be required to participate annually in the 5Essentials survey. This survey tool, developed by the University of Chicago, is given to teachers, students, and parents to help school districts assess their progress.

The parent survey is currently available to be completed by parents, guardians, or other caregivers with a child in grades prekindergarten through 12. The survey, which is completely confidential, is available in English or Spanish. It should take about 10 minutes to complete. If parents/guardians/caregivers have more than one (1) child that attends the same school, they may elect to participate more than once. However, only one (1) parent per household may participate in the survey. The survey will close January 18, 2019.

Please note that RICHLAND is listed only once for the survey as Richland Elementary. Both Richland Junior High and Richland Elementary parents should use Richland Elementary link. Please visit to take the survey. If you have any questions about the survey, please contact 5Essentials Customer Support at 1-866-440-1874 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Please consider taking a few minutes to provide us feedback through the survey this year. We appreciate your time.

Go Eagles!

Superintendent's Message

Welcome back to school!

Our staff has been working hard to get ready for a great year.  The rooms are clean, the staff is prepared, and we can’t wait to get started.  Please take a moment to read through this letter so you are aware of some important changes at RICHLAND this year.

We have restructured our administrative team and have many new staff members. The Elementary and Junior High will now each have its own principal.   Mr. Joseph Lindsey is principal of the Elementary and Mr. Jeremy Christian is the Junior High principal. Mr. Adam Troll is our new Dean of Students.  He is housed in the Junior High Office but will be working with all students (K-8th).   Mrs. Kristen Bonie remains as our Director of Student Services (Formerly title - Director of Special Education) but she is now located in the Elementary Office.    Ms. Christine Slechter is our new Director of Programs. Her duties include Athletics, Busing, Food Services/Lunchroom, Professional Development, and Curriculum to name a few.  Mr. Phil Robb, Director of Finance and Human Resources and myself, remain in the District Office.

We have several new faces and folks in new places this year with our secretarial staff.   Ms. Miriam Canal (ELL/Student Services) and Ms. Krys Sands (Elementary Principal’s Secretary) return but are now both located in the Elementary Office.  In our Junior High Office, you will find a familiar face in Mrs. Joanne Gonda (Dean/Assistant Activities Coordinator Secretary) along with 2 new faces, Ms. Angel Banks (Junior High Principal’s Secretary) and Ms. Tarrah Lang (Director of Programs Secretary).  In our District Office, Mrs. Andrea Kemp (Registrar and Superintendent Secretary) and Mrs. Jill Smith (Assistant to the Director of Finance and Human Resources) return. Our administrative and office teams are here to assist our families in any way we can, so please do not hesitate to contact us with questions.

NEW THIS YEAR - attendance, arrival and dismissal for Junior High students (5th-8th) will be handled in the Junior High Office (Ms. Tarrah Lang).  Elementary attendance, arrival, and dismissal (Kdg-4th) will be handled through the Elementary Office (Ms. Krys Sands).  The only exception to this is when you are picking up your child from the nurse.   We still only have one nurse’s office, so all nurse pick-ups will happen through the Elementary Office.

August is a very exciting and busy time with back to school events.  We hope families are able to join us for our back to school picnic on August 13th and Curriculum Nights later in September.

Please check our website and social media outlets (Twitter @Richland88a and Facebook @richlandd88a) for information, pictures, and ways to get involved in things happening in and around our school.  Also be sure to provide our offices with up to date phone and email information so that you will receive our automated voice and email messages in a timely manner.

It is going to be a great year!  Go Eagles!

Joe Simpkins,
