PARENTCONNECT PASSWORD LETTERS WERE MAILED HOME THIS WEEK.  This is an extra opportunity for you to monitor your child’s progress throughout the school year.  When you log onto ParentConnect you will see schedules, grades, assignments, discipline points, and attendance.  Please put the password in a secure place in your home, so that you can use it regularly.  If you did NOT receive one in the mail, please contact the school office at 815/744-6166 or email Mrs. Kemp at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The Parent/Student Handbook is in the front of the junior high planner.  THIS YEAR WE WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR CELL PHONE INFRACTIONS.    Discipline points will be assigned for using cell phones during school hours.  Please continue to review the Handbook with your son or daughter throughout the school year.  Take time to talk to your Junior High Student about discipline points and their part in behaving responsibly.

Our HOMEWORK HOTLINE is available all year!  This is a great opportunity for parents to check to see what’s being assigned by teachers.  Students can use the hotline to keep their schoolwork up-to-date.  To get connected simply dial the school (815/744-6166) and follow the prompts.  It’s a terrific way to keep organized and make learning a top priority.

Dear Students and Parents:

Welcome back to school for 2010-2011!  I hope you had an enjoyable summer and are looking forward to this year.  The first day of school is scheduled for Monday, August 23, 2010.

I am excited about the new opportunities that this year will present to the students, parents and community of Richland Junior High School and look forward to meeting the challenges this year will also present.  It is my hope that Richland will meet the needs of each individual student and provide them with the skills needed to be highly successful in high school and beyond.

Please read over the student handbook to become familiar with the requirements that are expected of our students.  Please sign the handbook notification form that was sent home with your student after reviewing and return to his/her homeroom teacher as soon as possible.  There will be two forms sent home for your signature:  THE STUDENT HANDBOOK NOTIFICATION and AUTHORIZATION FOR ELECTRONIC USAGE.

Curriculum Night is Thursday, August 26, 2010.  We will use the following schedule:

                        Grade 5                       (B-Gym)                      6:00 – 6:30

                        Grade 7                       (Main Gym)                 6:00 – 6:30

                        Teachers available in classrooms              6:30 – 7:00

                        Grade 6                       (B-Gym)                       7:00 – 7:30

                        Grade 8                       (Main Gym)                 7:00 – 7:30

At Curriculum Night, we will be ready to answer questions regarding our new REI classes in the Junior High building.  With the development of the State RtI plan, Richland is implementing REI classes every day.   REI is a class that will eliminate Study Hall this year.  REI is an acronym for Reinforce/Enrich through Intervention.  This enables teachers to have students pulled out of this period to meet their particular needs.  Teachers will cut homework up to 40% as they work with the students during REI periods.  You can learn more about the plans for Illinois schools at http://www.nasponline.org/resources/factsheets/rtiprimer.aspx

Currently, Baseball, Girls Softball, Boys Soccer and Cross Country teams are in full swing.  We encourage students to try at least one activity during the school year.  Future activities coming up during the new school year include: Literary Club, Scholastic Bowl, Basketball (boys/girls), Volleyball (boys/girls), Drama, Chess Club, Art Club, and Student Council.  Extra-curricular activities are beneficial for students to unwind, enjoy teamwork and remain well-rounded.  Join one and have fun.
