Discovery Testing  All 2nd-4th grade students are in the process of taking the beginning of the year Discovery Benchmark Test in both reading and math.   The teachers will be using the results of this assessment and others to make decisions about how we can best support our students during the R.E.I. block each day.

Last year, many students received re-teaching an interventions according to the RtI federal mandate in areas that were seen to be a skill gap.  This year, in addition to the RtI Interventions, ALL STUDENTS will be receiving instruction that is targeted at their skill need and ability level during the 30 minute scheduled REI time.  Intervention occurs every day under the format that we will call R.E.I.

R -Reinforcement - Students receiving reinforcement will be given hands-on activities and instruction that is tied to the curriculum in order to give them more access and practice at a particular skill they may be struggling with currently.  RtI would consider these opportunities to be Tier 1 preventive interventions.

E- Enrichment - Students receiving enrichment will be given project-based instruction and activities that will promote critical thinking skills and push their understanding of the curriculum to the next level.  RtI does not cover these types of interventions.

I- Interventions - Students receiving interventions will be given targeted skill instruction in small groups or individually for skills that are deficit more than one grade year.  RtI would consider these interventions to be Tier 2 or Tier 3 depending on the size of the group and the number of times instruction occur.

By adding reinforcement and enrichment to our district's RtI structure, we feel we can best meet the needs of our students and take all of them to the next level.

Please talk with your children about what they are doing during their REI Intervention time.  If you have questions, please contact your child's teachers or Mrs. Whyte for details.

Character Education continues to be important at Richland Elementary School.  We will be continuing the Soaring Eagles Program and school store this year under the PBIS Framework.  PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Supports.  PBIS acknowledges students for the good things they are doing as well as providing support in areas of behavior that are deficit.  PBIS offers students behavior supports needed for RtI.  The principles of character education are woven into everyday interactions and the curriculum in every grade. Students will be able to shop at the school store each quarter as well as qualify for quarterly incentives and/or the King and Queens Ball through their good behavior and display of positive character traits in all areas of the school.

If you have not done so, please fill out the Character Ed Survey to tell us the character traits most important to you.
